Sharks road woes continue in 5-1 loss to Monarchs

In their second game of a three-in-three weekend, the Worcester Sharks saw their road losing streak extend to 12-games as they were defeated 5-1 by the Manchester Monarchs Saturday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena.

Defenseman David Kolomatis put the Monarchs up 1-0 at 6:10 of the first period with his third power play goal of the season off a wrist shot from on top of the right face-off circle that got through traffic and beat Sharks goaltender Harri Sateri over the blocker.

Brandon Kozun extended the Monarchs lead to 2-0 with his first goal of the season at 17:14 after corralling a through-the-crease pass from linemate Dwight King, who had hit the post seconds earlier, and firing the puck past Sateri, who was spun around.

Just 16 seconds into the second period, Monarchs captain Marc-Andre Cliche blasted a shot from just inside the right face-off circle that went off the crossbar and in for his first goal of the season. The goal ended Sateri’s night in net as he was pulled for Alex Stalock after allowing three goals on 10 shots in 20:16 of playing time.

The goaltending change didn’t stop the Monarchs as Slava Voynov finished off a 3-on-1 shorthanded rush with a wrist shot from in-between the hash marks that beat Stalock stick side for his second goal of the season at 2:19. The goal was the third shorthanded goal allowed by the Sharks this season.

Monarchs center Andy Andreoff made it 5-0 with his first goal of the season at 10:05 after his centering feed from the right corner intended for linemate Nikolay Prokhorkin was deflected in front and got through the pads of Stalock for the goal.

Sharks rookie Sebastian Stalberg ended the shutout bid for Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones with his team leading fourth goal of the season at 19:06 off a wicked wrist shot from the left face-off circle that was initially stopped by Jones but the puck deflected off a Monarchs defenseman’s leg and went in. James Sheppard and Mike Banwell were credited with the assists on Stalberg’s goal.
