Sharks sign Kane to 7-year contract extension

Amid reports that a deal was close, the Sharks have officially re-signed Evander Kane to a seven-year contract extension. Though club policy is to not disclosed the details of the contract, TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports that the average annual value (AAV) is $7 million. This is close to the amount Hockey Graphs’ Matt Cane (@Cane_Matt) predicted for a contract of that length. Per CapFriendly, the deal includes a modified No-Trade Clause, with a three-team trade list, the same terms as Logan Couture, Joe Pavelski, Martin Jones, and Marc-Edouard Vlasic.

The Sharks added Kane from the Buffalo Sabres at the trade deadline, after it was clear Joe Thornton would not be returning before playoffs, in exchange for forward Daniel O’Regan, a conditional draft pick in 2019, and a conditional 2019 or 2020 pick. Because the Sharks re-signed Kane, the 2019 pick will be a first-round selection. The Sharks were reportedly the only offer on the table for Kane, whom Buffalo GM Jason Botterill had been shopping for much of the season.

Between Buffalo and San Jose, Kane reached a career-high of 78 games played in the 2018 season. He totaled 14 points (nine goals, five assists) in 17 games with the Sharks, adding five points (four goals, one assist) and 23 penalty minutes in his first nine career playoff games. He was also suspended for one game following an illegal crosscheck to Pierre-Edouard Bellemare of the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 1 of their second-round series.

The 26-year-old winger will be 33 when this contract expires in 2025. Doug Wilson has also locked up defensemen Brent Burns (33) and Marc-Edouard Vlasic (31) until the 2025 season, and goaltender Martin Jones through the 2024 season. The Sharks still have seven players whose contracts expire this year.
