Sharks sign Kings fan as emergency backup

SJSU alum Ryan Lowe will back up Antti Niemi tonight against the Flames.

With Troy Grosenick sustaining an upper-body injury in yesterday's practice and Alex Stalock still recovering from knee surgery, the Sharks searched far and wide this morning for a goaltender capable of backing up Antti Niemi on short notice for tonight's game against Calgary.

They found Ryan Lowe, a 31-year-old San Jose State University alum who last played professional hockey for the Sydney Bears of the Australian Ice Hockey League in 2013 and previously tended goal for the Utah Grizzlies in 2008 when they were still a ECHL franchise.

Lowe, a native of Redondo Beach, also happens to be a huge fan of the Los Angeles Kings.

This got awkward fast.

Lowe currently lives in San Jose and was hired as the Jr. Sharks' goaltending coach in May so we'll try not to hold that photo of him celebrating the lowest moment in Sharks franchise history, taken outside the very building where he'll suit up in teal colors tonight, against him.
