Sharks sign Timo Meier to entry-level contract

In the midst of the team’s week-long prospect development camp, the Sharks announced that they’ve signed their 2015 first round draft pick Timo Meier to an entry-level contract, anticipated to be the standard three-year deal carrying a base salary and cap hit of around $925,000 in addition to any bonuses that Meier achieves.

This is decidedly sooner than the Sharks have signed most of their recent first-rounders. Tomas Hertl wasn’t inked to a ELC until almost a full year after he was drafted, although his contract status in the Czech Extraliga combined with the NHL lockout likely contributed to that delay. Mirco Mueller, San Jose’s 2013 first rounder, and Nikolay Goldobin, the team’s top pick last year, weren’t signed until late September of their respective draft years. At 9th overall, though, Meier was a significantly higher selection than any of those players.

Coming off an extremely productive season in which he scored 44 goals and 90 points for Halifax in the QMJHL, Meier is a longshot to make the Sharks roster out of training camp this year although he’ll likely be given an opportunity. One of the older players in the 2015 draft class and already sporting a pro-quality 6’1″, 209-pound frame, the Swiss power forward is better equipped to make the jump than your average first-rounder but San Jose’s surplus of bodies up front will make it hard for Meier to claim a roster spot. Assuming he returns to the Mooseheads, a season without superstar linemate Nikolaj Ehlers should give us a better read on where Meier’s ceiling ultimately lies.
