Sharks trade Antti Niemi’s negotiating rights to Dallas for 7th rounder

It never really seemed like a possibility but Doug Wilson left the door open last week on goaltender Antti Niemi possibly being re-signed by the Sharks. That won’t be happening now as the Sharks have traded the negotiating rights to the pending UFA to Dallas for the Stars‘ 7th rounder in this draft, 193rd overall.

Niemi finishes his Sharks career with a 294-163-92 record and .917 SV% in 296 appearances over five seasons as their starting goaltender. Although much-maligned for his playing style and deservedly blamed for some poor playoff performances, Niemi provided the Sharks with above-average goaltending in the regular season at a very reasonable cap hit. They’ll now need to replace him, and remain hot on the trail of Rangers backup Cam Talbot.
