Sharks vs. Oilers preview: Kennedy on IR, Karlsson recalled

As the Sharks try not to suffer a second straight embarrassment at the hands of the lowly Edmonton Oilers, they’ve recalled forward Melker Karlsson from Worcester. Karlsson, who has 10 points in 20 AHL games this season, will make his NHL debut tonight on a line with Barclay Goodrow and James Sheppard as Matt Nieto and Tyler Kennedy remain out, the latter of whom has been placed on injured reserve. It’s the start of a five-game homestand on which they’ll face the Oilers twice in addition to Central Division foes Minnesota, St. Louis and Nashville—it’s a prime opportunity to make up ground after falling nine points behind division-leading Anaheim with Sunday’s loss.

Last Meeting

Two days ago the Sharks saw their four-game winning streak come to an end while the Oilers’ saw their eleven-game winless streak and 0-fer record against Western Conference opponents both dissipate with a 2-1 win over San Jose. Tye McGinn scored the lone goal for the Sharks.

Storylines
  • Antti Niemi is your confirmed starter for the Sharks while Ben Scrivens is expected to be in net for the second straight game against San Jose.
  • Tye McGinn, who scored his first goal of the season (and first as a Shark) in Sunday’s loss will be scratched to make room for Karlsson. Mirco Mueller will stay in the lineup on defense, meaning Matt Irwin will be a healthy scratch for the second straight game.
  • Troy Grosenick has been sent down to Worcester./
