Shea Weber, John Tavares and Alexander Ovechkin are Messier Award finalists

Alexander Ovechkin, Shea Weber, and John Tavares have been announced as the three finalists for the Mark Messier Leadership Award. The award is given to a player who “exemplifies great leadership qualities to the team, on and off the ice, during the regular season.” Messier chooses the three finalists himself.

Ovechkin has been captain of the Capitals for six years. He works with the American Special Hockey Association and won “Washingtonian of the Year” for his work with the organization. He also gives tickets to children in the ASHA and Most Valuable Kids (Ovi’s Crazy 8s).

Weber has been Nashville’s captain for six years, and works with charities both in Nashville and British Columbia. He and Pekka Rinne started the 365 Pediatric Cancer Fund, which donates tickets and money to children suffering from cancer in the Nashville area.

Tavares has been captain of the Islanders for three years. His Teammates program has been donating tickets to sick children for the last five seasons. He also works with the Islanders’ Military Appreciation Night.

The NHL Awards will be held in Las Vegas on June 22.
