Cam Lund feels like one of those prospects Sharks fans should be excited about. He’s been putting in work and getting ready for his first full season in the organization.
When I asked him about what he focused on over the summer, he immediately brought up strength and details.
“I think just kind of working on my details last summer. I think putting on muscle was a big thing for me, so putting on a few extra pounds, I think, will be huge for me this year, and kind of just getting stronger.”
That’s the kind of answer you want to hear from a young guy. he knows what he needs to do to be able to hang with NHL players. He’s also adjusting to the pace of the game and how fast things happen at the next level. I asked what the focus has been at practice:
“I think adjusting. We’re focusing more on the speed, playing with pace. I think that’s something like Warso always talks about, is pace,” said Lund.
He’s clearly not trying to get ahead of himself either. Lund knows this season is going to be a process and isn’t putting pressure on himself to be perfect right away.
“I kind of focus on the long game. I don’t want to think too far ahead. I think of it, day by day.”
Patience is big for a player trying to break into the league. He’s not just working on the flashy stuff; he’s taking pride in the little details that coaches love.
“Yeah, I think just being hard on pucks too. I think that’s another big thing. I think that’s just something that he [Ryan Warsofsky] talked about with the whole team, not just me, and I want to definitely continue working those things as the season goes on.”
And when it comes to his teammates, Lund is soaking up everything he can.
“Learning a lot from the older guys, just trying to take as much information as you can and kind of just kind of learn as it goes on,” said Lund.
You can tell Lund is taking the right approach. To build strength, play with pace, learn from the veterans, and keep stacking good days. For a Sharks team that’s building toward the future, he’s exactly the kind of player they want in the picture. It might take time before we see him full-time in San Jose, but Lund is clearly putting himself in a good position to be ready when his number gets called.
