T.J. Galiardi Re-Signed for One Year, $950k

The good people at Capgeek are now reporting that T.J. Galiardi’s previously alluded-to one-year contract is for $950,000 (stick tap to reader Evilducks for calling attention to it on Twitter). With this signing, the Sharks and Galiardi both avoid arbitration after Galiardi filed for it last Thursday.

This seems like a fair deal for both parties as Galiardi gets a $220k raise over what his qualifying offer would have been and the Sharks have the benefit of a one-year term during which they can get a better sense of what value Galiardi provides to the club while not being committed to him past 2013 should he falter. It’s difficult to figure out what Galiardi really is as an NHL player. His 40-point season in 09-10 was largely built on unsustainable percentages as the Avs scored on a ridiculous 11% of their 5v5 shots when he was on the ice that season. On the other hand, his poor 14-game stint with the Sharks at the end of last season also wasn’t a fair representation of his abilities as he played through injuries for much of it. If Galiardi can chip in close to ten goals while providing an effective presence on the forecheck, this contract will be solid value.

With the signing, the Sharks have about $5.57 million in cap space remaining with two forward slots to fill. Assuming James Sheppard signs his $761,250 qualifying offer, that leaves the team with about $4.8 million in space with one forward left to sign. There’s still room for a big-ticket acquisition like Alexander Semin or Shane Doan (although it may necessitate dealing Douglas Murray and/or crossing their fingers for an amnesty buyout period in the new CBA so they can dump Michal Handzus) but I’d be surprised if the Sharks sign either.
