Thursday Chum Bucket: Burns placed on IR to open roster spot

  • In order to open up the roster spot necessary to sign Scott Gomez, the Sharks placed Brent Burns on injured reserve, as expected. Burns has reportedly not skated since the start of training camp. [CSN Bay Area]
  • David Pollak on when Gomez plays his first game in teal: “Look for Gomez to be in the lineup before the weekend is over, but I’d be beyond surprised if he’s in there opening night against Phoenix.” [Working the Corners]
  • San Jose also signed Tim Kennedy to an NHL contract yesterday. Kennedy was named an AHL All-Star and is currently leading Worcester in scoring. [San Jose Sharks]
  • Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith, who was third in the league with a .930 SV% last season, suffered a lower body injury and left the game during the first period of last night’s win over Columbus. The ‘Yotes think they’ll have him back soon but it’s probably unlikely he plays tonight in San Jose. [SB Nation]
