Following a clean hit against the boards, Winnipeg Jets defender Tyler Myers cross checked Tommy Wingels in the head and received a five-minute major and a game misconduct. Not only was the penalty undisciplined and dangerous, it couldn’t have come at a worse time. The Jets were down a goal with seven minutes to go and the penalty guaranteed the Sharks would be on a power play until there were two minutes to play.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Myers got a call from the league office for this hit, particularly since it came (seemingly) unprovoked. The Sharks took advantage of the mistake, in part thanks to a tripping penalty drawn by Alex Stalock (that’s the most generous way I can refer to that play), and eventually downed the Jets 4-1.
Winnipeg has a bit of a reputation with discipline issues and sit second in the league with 209 penalties taken. That discipline reared its ugly head against the Sharks — and San Jose took advantage, even if it took a while.
Wingels appeared to be fine after the play. Remember he played very briefly in Monday’s game after colliding with Joonas Donskoi in the neutral zone.
