Winter Olympics 2014: Canada vs. Sweden gold medal game preview and discussion thread

Team USA’s fate was sealed with a 5-0 loss to Finland in yesterday’s bronze medal game but two of the four Sharks in Sochi still have a shot at gold as Patrick Marleau, Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Team Canada prepare to take on Team Sweden in the gold medal game that closes the 2014 Winter Olympics.

For Marleau, it’s an opportunity to win the second gold medal of his hockey career, something only Jarome Iginla has accomplished among active players (of course, a slew of Marleau’s Canadian teammates who were also on the 2010 squad would join him on that list). Not bad for a player constantly (and unfairly) maligned for being unable to deliver in big moments. But before that can happen, Mike Babcock’s team will need to dispatch a Swedish club that has remained undefeated throughout the tournament despite injuries to their top two centers and an additional top-nine winger.

This one starts painfully early on the west coast but it should be great hockey. Discuss the game here if you’re awake for it!
