It appears that Tommy Wingels has no roster spot on the 2016-17 Sharks. After the acquisition of Mikkel Boedker and the likeliness that prospect Timo Meier makes the team out of camp in the fall, Wingels’ tenure as a Shark – one that began in 2008 when he was selected as the 177th overall pick in the NHL Draft out of Miami University – looks to be coming to an end.
While he still looks like a kid, it’s easy to forget that Wingels is a 28-year old third/fourth line forward who took a major step back this season. After putting up 38 and 36 points in 2013-14 and 2014-2015, respectively, Wingels scored just seven goals and had 11 assists in 68 games for the Sharks this season. He also got called for more penalties; his PIM of 63 was 23 minute more than the 40 he acquired in 2014-2015 when he played seven more games.
