2016 Stanley Cup Final Game 3: Tomas Hertl out

This is nightmare.

The Sharks will be without Tomas Hertl in tonight’s game 3, according to head coach Pete DeBoer. (UPDATE: He’s out with a lower body injury) There’s no way around this: this is a big loss for the Sharks.

According to War-on-Ice, Hertl has posted a negative 5v5 Corsi differential against just three Penguins this series, forming a crucial part of what has unquestionably been the Sharks’ best line all postseason. Hertl’s also generated the most scoring chances of any Shark against Pittsburgh. The Czech winger has 11 points in 20 playoff games this postseason, and is tied for third on the team with six goals.

Hertl’s arguably been the Sharks’ biggest X-factor this season, as his move to the top line really propelled Pavelski and Thornton’s play, as well as San Jose’s place in the standings. Melker Karlsson will have big skates to fill tonight as he is likely to slide on to the top line, based on yesterday’s practice.
