2018 NHL All Star Game captains, jerseys announced

The annual NHL All Star Game is just around the corner and this year, the best in the league will be heading to Tampa Bay, Florida for a weekend while their teammates head south to vacation on the beach.

At least it’s warm in Florida, right?

Once again, captains were selected via a fan vote and as usual, the Sharks were nowhere to be found. The last update on fan voting showed two Vegas Golden Knights players in the top-five for the Pacific Division, but the Sharks were nowhere to be found.

Here are the results:

Atlantic Division: Steven Stamkos, Tampa Bay Lightning
Metropolitan Division: Alex Ovechkin, Washington Capitals
Central Division: P.K. Subban, Nashville Predators
Pacific Division: Connor McDavid, Edmonton Oilers

No real surprises here. As long as the Pacific Division has Connor McDavid, we’re pretty unlikely to see a different ASG Captain.

With the announcement came the jersey reveals and, well…

What?

These are hideous, right? It’s not just me?

The Atlantic jersey was allegedly inspired by the Tampa Bay blue, but adding the yellow gives it a pretty distinct St. Louis Blues warm up jersey look. The light gray of the Metro? What a terrible, bland color paired with neon yellow like a repeat of the 2014 All Star Game. Why are the Central and Pacific orange? Why do they look like home and away Philadelphia Flyers jerseys? Who is going to spend money on these?

The rosters haven’t been announced yet, but Brent Burns is a safe bet. Joe Pavelski is another highly likely selection. Martin Jones, Logan Couture, and Joe Thornton all have a case for themselves, as well.

Whoever ends up going, my deepest condolences for having to sport that ugly jersey.
