Sharks sign defenseman Dalton Prout to one-year contract

Prout recorded two points in 20 games with the Calgary Flames in 2018-19.

The San Jose Sharks have signed free agent defenseman Dalton Prout to a one-year, one-way contract worth $800,000, according to Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports. The Sharks confirmed the report earlier today.

Prout spent the 2018-19 season with the Calgary Flames, where he skated in 20 games and recorded one goal and one assist. He also suited up in four AHL games with the Stockton Heat, where he recorded one goal and two assists.

Prior to his time with the Flames, Prout spent time in the Eastern Conference with the New Jersey Devils and Columbus Blue Jackets. His most successful season was the 2015-16 campaign, when he appeared in 64 games for Columbus and recorded nine points (three goals, six assists).

“Dalton is a very smart defenseman who has shown he can move the puck cleanly under pressure and keep his turnover rates low,” said Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson, “We believe his ability to hold the defensive zone blue line is underrated and that he is one of the best at limiting net-front rebounds by effectively using his size and stick. We’re excited to add his responsible defensive play to our blue line.”
