In the final move for the San Jose Sharks at the 2019 NHL Trade Deadline, they have acquired winger Jonathan Dahlen in exchange for center Linus Karlsson.
Jonathan Dahlen is a highly touted prospect who was drafted 42nd overall in 2016 out of the Swedish Allsvenskan league by the Ottawa Senators. In 2017, Dahlen’s rights were trade to the Vancouver Canucks for Alex Burrows. Dahlen signed a three-year, entry level contract worth $925,000 in April 2017 with the Canucks.
Now 21 years old, Dahlen has made the leap to North America, playing with the Canucks’ AHL affiliated Utica Comets this season. The Canucks have reportedly been disappointed in his development there.
In 145 games with Timrå IK of Allsvenskan, Dahlen totaled 63 goals and 54 assists for 117 points at a .81 points per game pace. That rate hate dropped slightly in his first year in the AHL, putting up 15 goals and 16 assists in 52 games, a .60 points per game pace. Still, Dahlen may do well with a change of scenery, and being surrounded by Swedish nationals in San Jose could help his development get back on track. If things turn around, Dahlen could be ready for the big club inside of two years.
Linus Karlsson was drafted by the Sharks in the third round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. The Canucks will be getting a solid, younger played in Karlsson, but the Sharks are making out with the better player right now.
Dahlen is expected to report to the San Jose Barracuda.
