Expansion Draft Extravaganza: Check out our version of the Vegas Golden Knights

After just over two weeks and thanks to you, our Expansion Draft Extravaganza is now complete. The votes are in and, although we had to make some changes to the Metropolitan Division picks to keep the team cap compliant and meeting the NHL’s positional requirements, we are ready to unveil our version of the Vegas Golden Knights.

Of course, it cannot match the real thing, given the NHL’s release of its protected lists during it (you say it’s bad planning, I say it’s “creative license). But, it still provided a fascinating look in the Fear the Fin community’s thought process in putting together a team, as well as the individual protected lists.

*Denotes player who was not originally selected in vote. Highest-vote getters on Carolina (RW Lee Stempniak, $2,500,000), Columbus (C Boone Jenner $2,900,000) and Philadelphia (RW Matt Read, $3,625,000) would have left Vegas over the salary cap ceiling and a defenseman short of the positional minimum.

Players under contract for 2016-17 (26/20)

Salary Cap Space: $843,333

Eight players selected (Sutter, Silfverberg, Jarnkrok, De Haan, Brodin, Manning, Schenn, Martin) ended up being protected on a team’s expansion list, or via a reported trade, which speaks to solid predictive accuracy on the part of the protected lists submitted by readers and writers. Considering none of our submissions predicted Adam Pelech, Matt Martin, and Ryan Reaves, I’d say you did better than a lot of the lists that were actually submitted.

We did, however, tie up a lot of a salary in our iteration of the Golden Knights, which would provide our George McPhee a tall task to create more flexibility. Still, a decent number of those big contracts are movable (especially Jason Demers), as are a lot of the players signed to cheap deals that remain under team control.

Thank you to everyone who submitted a list, voted on players to select, or just read these posts over the last two weeks. Let’s see how this alternate version of the Vegas Golden Knights compares to the one unveiled tonight.
