Matt Tennyson signs with Carolina Hurricanes

Defender Matt Tennyson signed a one-year, two-way deal with the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday.  He was an unrestricted free agent and, as far as I’m aware, did not receive an offer from the San Jose Sharks.

Tennyson spent the past five seasons in the San Jose system and played 29 games at the NHL level last season. During his time with the Sharks he tallied 14 points in 60 games.

Despite being a fill-in candidate last season, Tennyson is below players like Mirco Mueller and Dylan DeMelo on the depth chart so it’s not surprising to see him move on. He was undrafted and signed with the Sharks following his collegiate career at Western Michigan.

The 26-year-old defender is right-handed and will have a chance to compete for a roster spot with the Hurricanes. I’m hoping for the best for Tennyson as he continues his career in ‘Canes country. Thanks for everything, Tenny!
