Meier-ed in the memories

Today marks one year and one day since the San Jose Sharks traded Timo Meier to the New Jersey Devils. (You can see Fear the Fin’s look back at the trade here.) In honor of the anniversary, it’s only fitting that Meier makes his return to San Jose for the first time since the trade. Sharks fans certainly miss the power forward. Last season was a career year in goals for Meier; he scored 40 between the Sharks and the Devils.

So, in honor of the return of number 28, let’s look back at some of the great memories the Swiss hockey player brought to Sharks fans everywhere.

How it all started

Sharks fans were stoked when the team drafted Meier 9th overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

Fans knew the Sharks had drafted a hard-charging power forward with a quick wrist shot and a great hockey sense. They were not disappointed, though they had to wait a bit for his debut. Meier was allowed to percolate in juniors for a season and spent a little time with the Barracuda before he was called up to the big club.

On Dec. 16, 2016, Meier scored his first NHL goal. When asked about it years later, he called it an ugly goal. We disagree. Anytime you can beat Carey Price in his prime, you’ve done a great job.

The 2018-19 coming out party

On a team stacked with names like Erik Karlsson, Brent Burns, Tomas Hertl and Logan Couture, it was Meier’s second full season on the Sharks that marked a coming out for the power forward. A snippet from Fear the Fin’s Player Power Rankings Week 11 places Meier above everyone else in December of 2018.

It’s hard to argue against Meier as the team’s top player when you look at the numbers. The young forward had four goals that week, leading Erik Johnsgard to write: “Meier leads the team in points per 60 minutes played, goals per 60, shots per 60, we could go on forever like this. In second place on the team in goals, third in points, and fourth in shots, Meier is the engine that has driven the Sharks through this recent run of success.”

Meier finished the season with 66 points in 78 games and achieved his first 30-goal season, which included this highlight from a game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Timo Time in overtime

While Timo wasn’t always consistent, he did give you some great highlights and of course, it was always fun when it’s Timo Time in overtime.

Timo adds dagger to Vegas’ playoff dreams

Anytime you can add a F*** Vegas clip into the mix, it’s worth it. While it wasn’t Timo Time in Overtime, it was Timo at the buzzer. On April 24, 2022, Meier helped the Sharks put an end to Vegas’ playoff dreams when he scored a goal with less than a second left on the clock to tie the game. Fans will remember that in the shootout that followed, Thomas Bordeleau handed Vegas the finishing blow.

1…2…3…4…5!

Then, of course, who could forget that five-goal performance against the Los Angeles Kings? Three goals in the first period, a taco goal in the second and then a fifth goal for good measure. We’ll share the taco goal here, but you can find the rest of them at the following link.

Thanks for the memories, Timo. We’re looking forward to cheering you on tonight at the Tank.
