SAN JOSE — Timo Meier will miss about a month after being diagnosed with mononucleosis, according to Sharks general manager Doug Wilson.
“Timo Meier is expected to be unable to play in any NHL or AHL games for approximately four weeks after being diagnosed with mononucleosis. He will remain in the Bay Area where he can skate and train as his recovery allows,” Wilson said in a statement.
The 2015 first round pick missed the previous five days of practice, and told reporters this afternoon that he was feeling symptoms “a couple days” before missing his first practice on Sunday.
Meier, who was vying to make the San Jose Sharks’ opening night roster, will now likely to miss opening night with the big club, barring any unforeseen changes in his condition.
Coach Pete DeBoer said previously that Meier missing the time would give the Sharks a longer look at some of their other young players.
“It definitely opens up room. More guys are going to get opportunities to play in exhibition games,” DeBoer said yesterday. “Maybe you had a guy penciled in for one game because you had [Meier] penciled in for two or three, or four. Now, every game that he misses, someone else gets that chance.”
