Tiburones 4, Islanders 1: A scrappy rematch sees Tiburones come out on top

Hispanic Heritage Night was one to be remembered, as the Los Tiburones came away with a 4-1 victory over the New York Islanders.

Much like their previous win against the Buffalo Sabres, Los Tiburones were in control of the puck and once again the shots were going in for them. In the first period, they took an early 1-0 lead, but in the dying seconds to end the period, the Islanders were able to tie it.

In the second, Los Tiburones began to pull away from the Islanders, controlling the puck for the majority of the period leading to Joonas Donskoi and Brent Burns getting on the score sheet.

Logan Couture made it 4-1 for Los Tiburones in the third period, but the extracurricular activity at the 10-minute mark is when the fireworks came out. A lot of pushing and shoving with Evander Kane, Anders Lee and Scott Mayfield being at the center of it. Nonetheless, Los Tiburones walked away with two points and a successful homestand.

Pregame

It’s Hispanic Heritage Night at SAP Center with Los Tiburones looking to carry-over their offensive performance from two nights ago as they welcome the New York Islanders.

Last week, the San Jose Sharks were in Brooklyn to kick-off their East Coast swing and were punched in the mouth by the Islanders, who went on to win 4-0. However, this time around the Sharks appear to have turned the corner after finding their stride against the Buffalo Sabres.

The oft-mentioned power play struggled to start the season, but last time we saw them, the Sharks scored three goals on the man-advantage to calm the nerves of those in Sharks Territory. Although the offense is coming around, the team continues to play with fire, as they provide the opposition with their own power play opportunities.

The Islanders, on the other hand, are coming off a 7-2 thumping win over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday. Led by Mathew Barzal who leads the team with seven points through six games, the Islanders will look to end their California road trip by going 2-1.

Here’s the projected lines for Los Tiburones tonight and it looks like there will be no Joe Thornton.

As for the Islanders, here are their lines from this morning’s warm-ups.

When it comes to who starts in net, Martin Jones will get the nod while it looks like the Islanders will counter with Robin Lehner.

Finally, here are some stats on both teams; take a look at the power play percentage and how a good night makes it go from 9 percent to almost 18 percent, so expect this continue to improve as they’ve looked to have found their groove.

End of the First Period:

Los Tiburones were in control of the puck in the first, possessing a 67% Corsi-for during 5v5 play and it resulted in the team generating 11 shots-for and eight scoring chances. Timo Meier was able to get one by Robin Lehner to give Los Tiburones an early lead; however, the Islanders capitalized on one of their four scoring chances as Brock Nelson tied the game with 32 seconds left in the first period. Good first period, lots of offense being genrated by the team, if they continue with this play there will be plenty more chances to take the lead.

Second Period

End of the Second Period:

The floodgates are opening for Los Tiburones offensively, tonight it’s on 5v5 play rather than on the power play. In the second the dominated possession during 5v5 play resulting in one goal and the other while playing 4v4. Los Tiburones dominated even strength play, generating 12 shots-for and 14 scoring chances in the second period.

Third Period

16:18: Lehner continues to keep the Islanders in as he denies Kane

15:28: GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL! de los Tiburones! Logan Couture makes it 4-1 goal

12:26: On onslaught of chances by the Islander but Martin Jones keeps them off the score sheet

11:23: This third line is really creating some chances in this game

10:08: For two teams that only see each other twice a year, there’s some animosity between them
