Joe Pavelski named NHL’s Second Star of the Week

The Sharks All-Star is earning even more accolades this season.

The NHL’s latest installment of their Three Stars of the Week features Sharks captain Joe Pavelski as their second star for the week ending on Jan. 27.

The two games the Sharks played last week featured plenty of offensive output from their captain. In a forgettable game against the Florida Panthers in Sunrise on Monday night, Pavelski was credited with the secondary assist on Timo Meier’s tying goal midway through the second period. The following night in the District of Columbia against the Capitals, Pavelski had a four-point performance for the 12th time in his career, scoring 12 seconds (how coincidental) into the game and adding three assists, including a secondary assist on Evander Kane’s game-tying goal with only a second to go.

Pavelski also competed in the NHL All-Star Skills competition on Friday night, in which he finished fourth overall in the Accuracy Shooting competition, knocking out all five targets in 14.423 seconds.

The Sharks’ captain is enjoying another highly-productive offensive season. He’s already eclipsed his goal-scoring total from last year, in which he only scored 22 goals, and is closing in on his goal-scoring total from the 2016-17 campaign, where he scored 29. He also boasts a 2.28 primary points per game rate so far this season.

The last time Pavelski had an offensive season similar to his current one was in the 2015-16 season, in which he scored 38 goals and contributed 2.29 primary points per game. That season, the Sharks made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals. Pavelski's production and the overall team success seems encouraging going into the second half of the season.
