Quick Bites: Couture’s hat-trick not enough as Sharks lose 5-3 to Islanders

The New York Islanders defeated the San Jose Sharks 5-3 in the team’s second game of their five-game east coast road trip.

San Jose was coming off their best performance of the season after shutting out the New Jersey Devils last night, but against the Islanders tonight it was more of the same from what we’ve seen this season.

Both teams started off sluggish scoring no goals in the first period, but the teams found their offenses in the second.

Logan Couture scored two of his three goals on the night in the second, with one coming off a power play. Islanders captain John Tavares picked up an assist on Anders Lee’s goal and left-winger John Bailey added in another goal.

In the third, with the game tied, the Islanders struck first, scoring three minutes into the period on an Andrew Ladd sniper. Then Anders Lee added his second goal of the night off a highlight reel assist by Tavares to extend their lead by two.

Couture, who’s been the hottest Shark the last two games, responded by garnering his second career hat-trick by redirecting the puck off a Brent Burns shot, cutting the lead to one goal.

But the Isles captain wouldn’t go away as he scored the eventual game clinching empty net goal topping off a three-point night.

Aaron Dell was in, giving Martin Jones the night off after his impressive shutout win over the Devils. Dell’s performance was rough, to say the least, giving up four goals on 18-22 saves (.818 save percentage).

The Sharks next game will be Monday against the New York Rangers as the team looks to improve to a .500 record.
