Report: Sharks, Jones headed towards extension

The San Jose Sharks have had “very positive” talks with goaltender Martin Jones, and could sign him to an extension as early as July, according to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun.

Sharks general manager Doug Wilson told reporters at his end-of-season press conference that re-signing Jones and defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic was among the team’s top priorities this offseason.

“Both of them are extremely important to get under contract and we can start those discussions in the next little while,” Wilson said at the time.

The question is not whether the Sharks will re-sign Jones, but for how long and for how much. Earlier this offseason, we projected that Jones’ next contract will likely be in line with Corey Crawford and Cory Schneider’s (six or seven years, $6,000,000 AAV).

San Jose has just 10 players signed for the 2018-19 season, according to Cap Friendly. Jones, Vlasic, Aaron Dell, Jannik Hansen, and Joel Ward will become unrestricted free agents next summer, and are first eligible to sign extensions on July 1.
