This has been a pretty disappointing training camp. Timo Meier, the most interesting player entering the camp, hardly saw any action after contracting mono and now the Sharks have cut six players the day before the preseason that effectively ends any hope of a ‘youth movement.’
Yes, Meier is still on the roster but I would be very surprised to see him stick around for long — even if his stint with the Barracuda is strictly a conditioning assignment. Today the Sharks sent Kevin Labanc, Mirco Mueller, Dan Kelly, Ryan Carpenter, Barclay Goodrow and Nikolay Goldobin to the Barracuda.
That’s great news for the Barracuda, but pretty disappointing news for Sharks fans. This is true for a couple of reasons. First, at least one of these guys should have made the team as a forward if for no other reason than giving them NHL experience would help their development. Second, let’s all take a gander at the Sharks current roster to see who’s still on the team.
Yup, that’s Micheal Haley on the San Jose Sharks roster. If San Jose learned one thing from their long postseason run, it should have been that skill and a useful heavy game carried them to the Finals — not fighting. Haley doesn’t bring useful grit to the team because he’s not a good hockey player — he’s a good fighter. The Sharks need hockey players, not fighters.
Hopefully we’ll see some of these young guys soon, because as it stands these are some pretty disappointing roster decisions.
