San Jose Sharks prospect check-in: OHL, QMJHL, WHL, USHL October

Checking in on San Jose Sharks prospects Luca Cagnoni, Kasper Halttunen, Felix Gagnon, Jake Furlong, Quentin Musty, Brandon Svoboda, Mason Beaupit , David Klee.

From time to time, we like to check in on the players in the Sharks farm system to see how they’re doing with their respective clubs. There’s a lot on this list to get excited about. The latest crop of draftees, including Luca Cagnoni, Kasper Halttunen and Quentin Musty, are thriving in the lower leagues. Meanwhile, Jake Furlong is now the captain of his QMJHL team and Felix Gagnon is on a more than point per game pace.

Mason Beaupit (G) – Muskegon Lumberjacks USHL

There’s a lot of attention on the Sharks goaltending pipeline, specifically with the players currently playing for the San Jose Barracuda, so Beaupit may not get as much attention. The 2022 draftee played for the Wenatchee Wild of the WHL last season, including three games with the Wild in the playoffs. However, it seems that this season, the team does not need Beaupit’s services. The young goaltender was reassigned to the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the USHL in early October. Beaupit has yet to play a game for the Lumberjacks.

Luca Cagnoni (D) – Portland Winterhawks WHL

Cagnoni is having a year with the Portland Winterhawks, which could have many teams questioning why they let the young defenseman fall all the way to 123rd in the 2023 NHL Entry draft. Sharks fans say thanks.

Cagnoni has 12 points in 7 games for the Winterhawks. He missed a few of the team’s first games of the season because he was here at training camp with the Sharks. The defenseman rivals most of the forwards on the explosive Winterhawks team. He’s fourth on the team in shots on goal with 32 and tied for fifth in scoring.

Cagnoni had a four-point night on Oct. 18 against the Brandon Wheat Kings and didn’t even make the three stars of the game because the Winterhawks won decisively 11-1. Two players for the Winterhawks had hat tricks, edging Cagnoni out of the running.

For Sharks fans itching to see more of what Cagnoni can do, check out his first goal of the season on Oct. 7.

Jake Furlong (D) – Halifax Mooseheads QMJHL

Fresh off signing an entry-level contract with the Sharks early in October and finding himself named captain of the Halifax Mooseheads, Furlong is having a good season on the blueline. The 19-year-old has yet to light the lamp, but he has six assists in ten games, three of those on the power play. He also leads defensemen with 23 shots on goal.

Speaking of the Halifax Mooseheads, the team’s goalie recently made SportsCenter for an impressive goalie goal. He has nothing to do with the Sharks besides playing with Furlong, but I’ll leave this here anyway.

Felix Gagnon (C) – Baie-Comeau, Drakkar in QMJHL

Young Gagnon is having an excellent start to the season with Baie Comeau, Drakkar, where he’s on more than a point per game pace. The forward has 13 points in 11 games, including 4 goals. Gagnon had a two-goal game on Oct. 15 in a loss to the Victoriaville Tigres. Somehow, seeing that second goal announcement in French makes it much sweeter.

Kasper Halttunen (F) – London Knights OHL

Halttunen is on a point per game pace for the London Knights and he’s racking up the goals as he goes. The young forward has 11 points in 11 games, and 9 of those are goals. Halttunen recently had a two-goal game against the Sarnia Sting on Oct. 22.

David Klee (F) – Muskegon Lumberjacks USHL

Also playing for the Muskegon Lumberjacks is David Klee. The forward was drafted 196th overall by the Sharks in the 2023 NHL Entry draft. This is Klee’s first season in the USHL and he’s doing well. In nine games, Klee has two goals and three assists. His first USHL goal came on Sept. 30. His second goal in the USHL came just over a week later when he redirected a shot by Owen Keefe.

Quentin Musty (F) – Sudbury Wolves OHL

After a strong showing with the Sharks at training camp, young forward Quentin Musty was returned to his team, the Sudbury Wolves in the OHL. Despite missing the start of the season with the Wolves, Musty did not waste any time making his presence known. The 18-year-old has seven points in five games, including two goals.

His most recent goal came on Oct. 21 against the Barrie Colts. Musty had a goal and an assist in the team’s 5-3 win.

Brandon Svoboda (F) – Youngstown Phantoms USHL

Svoboda has two goals and two assists in nine games for the Youngstown Phantoms of the USHL.

His most recent goal was the game winner for the Phantoms on Oct. 20 against the Madison Capitols.
