Sharks sign Lukas Radil, Barracuda move forwards

San Jose Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has agreed to terms with left winger Lukas Radil. The 27-year-old will join the Sharks on a one-year contract to continue an already successful season previously spent with Kontinental Hockey League’s Spartak Moscow and the Czech National Team. This past season, Radil scored 38 points (16 goals, 22 assists) over 51 games with Spartak, and made six appearances during the Olympic games with the Czech National Team.

Wilson stated that “Lukas is a big-bodied, puck possession forward who has been playing professional hockey at a high level for seven-plus seasons. He is coming off his most successful year yet, and has represented his country on the world’s biggest stages. We feel his game will translate well to the way we play and we’re excited to welcome him to San Jose next season.”

Monetary terms are not presently available for this contract, nor is it known what number Radil will wear with the Sharks organization. Radil has worn #69 with both Spartak Moscow and the Czech National Team.

At the American Hockey League level, the San Jose Barracuda have released right winger Caleb Herbert and center Sam Warning from their professional tryout agreements.

Caleb Herbert scored four points (one goal, three assists) over 12 games with the Barracuda and is expected to report back to the Greenville Swamp Rabbits of the ECHL.

Sam Warning also recorded four points (two goals, two assists) over his 18 game tenure with the Barracuda. Warning is expected to also return to the ECHL, albeit with the Florida Everblades.

In place of Herbert and Warning, center Alexander “Sasha” Chmelevski and left winger Ivan Chekhovich will join the Barracuda on amateur tryout agreements. Both players were selected by the San Jose Sharks during the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.

Sasha Chmelevski was selected 185th overall by the Sharks in the sixth round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. The 18-year-old Ukranian-American center recently finished a productive season with the Ottawa 67s of the Ontario Hockey League, wherein he scored 76 points (35 goals, 41 assists) over 68 games. Chmelevski has also signed a three-year entry-level contract due to start in the 2018-2019 season.

Ivan Chekhovich was selected 212th overall by the Sharks in the seventh round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. The 19-year-old Russian winger had previously spent his 2017-2018 season with the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Baie-Comeau Drakkar, registering 60 points (29 goals, 31 assists) over 65 games. Chekhovich will wear #82 with the Sharks organization.
