San Jose State hosting ACHA National Tournament– and they need your help

Beginning tomorrow morning the San Jose State Spartans will be hosting the 2011 Division II National Tournament at Sharks Ice in San Jose. It’s a huge testament to the growth of Bay Area Hockey over the last decade. In order to celebrate that growth, we will be providing coverage of the event and a few articles along the way that look at hockey in the Bay Area and highlight some exciting patterns of growth that we have been seeing. Expect those articles to be published starting tomorrow.

However, in order for events like this to succeed, volunteers are needed. The San Jose State Ice Hockey program is primarily funded by the players and coaching staff, receiving little in the way of monetary help from the University– budget cuts to the state’s public school system haven’t helped matters in this regard, meaning that SJSU is always looking for interested members of the community to lend a helping hand during the event.

Which is where you can come in.

The tournament begins tomorrow at 11 AM and runs until Saturday at 8 PM. With such a large amount of time allocated for the event, the Spartans have reached out to the community in order to ensure that the tournament runs smoothly. Positions for PA Announcers, DJ’s, and camera operators still need to be filled, and the entry barrier is small– all volunteers will be trained on-site by the staff.

If interested, please visit the Spartans volunteer page. Included on that page is two google docs that specify the areas and time slots for volunteers, as well as contact information for Janelle Zalinski, the tournament director who can get you squared away.

Help support your local hockey community and make the Nationals Tournament a successful one for the Bay Area.
