Head-to-head scoring chances
- It's hard to overstate the extent to which the Nathan Gerbe/Jordan Staal/Elias Lindholm line devoured the Sharks at even-strength. As the chart above demonstrates, they absolutely laid waste to the Pavelski line which will hopefully never skate a shift together ever again.
- Jordan Staal had a sequence in the third period where he registered four scoring chances in a row, one of which beat Alex Stalock. Just a mammoth performance by that line.
- I mentioned it in the recap but Logan Couture was far and away the best player for the Sharks in this game. Despite missing part of the third period with an injury, San Jose outchanced the Hurricanes 6-1 when he was on the ice at even-strength. When he was on the bench or in the dressing room, the Sharks were outchanced 17-5 at evens.
- Not to keep piling on them but Havlat/Pavelski/Kennedy absolutely bottomed out as a line combination in this game. With Matt Nieto back in San Jose where he belongs, I'm guessing that experiment is mercifully over and done with.
