Scott Hannan announced his retirement today. He last played in the NHL with the Sharks in the 2014-15 season and will retire as a member of San Jose. Hannan’s last tenure with the Sharks wasn’t a good one, but it’s important to remember he was in fact quite good in his first go with San Jose.
He spent 11 of his 16 years in the league with the Sharks and is one of only six players to play more than 600 games in San Jose. Hannan scored 38 goals and tallied 179 assists as a member of the Sharks.
He was selected in the first round of the 1997 draft by the Sharks.

SAN JOSE, CA – Defenseman Scott Hannan today formally announced his retirement from the game of hockey, after 16 seasons in the National Hockey League – 11 of which he spent as a member of the San Jose Sharks.
“I was extremely fortunate to play in the NHL with five great organizations,” said Hannan. “I’d like to thank all of my teammates and coaches over the years who have contributed so much to my career. It’s also very gratifying to end my NHL career where it started – with the San Jose Sharks. I’d be remiss for not also thanking Bruce Hamilton and Lorne Frey with the Kelowna Rockets for putting me on the path to have a chance to play in the NHL. Most importantly, I want to thank all of my family, particularly my wife Kristina and my boys, Gage and Owen. Their sacrifices have allowed me the opportunity to follow this dream of playing in the National Hockey League.”

A stand-out defensive defenseman, Hannan, 37, played in 1,055 NHL games with San Jose, Colorado, Washington, Calgary and Nashville, posting 217 points (38 goals, 179 assists) and 625 penalty minutes.
He spent the majority of his NHL career in San Jose, scoring 146 points (30 goals, 116 assists) and 412 penalty minutes in 626 games, which ranks him 6th on the franchise’s all-time games played list (3rd amongst team defensemen).
Hannan also appeared in 76 Stanley Cup Playoff games with the Sharks (6th all-time), including the 2004 Western Conference Final. He posted 19 points, (one goal, 18 assists) which places him 15th on the franchise’s all-time playoff scoring list. In 100 career Stanley Cup Playoff games with San Jose, Colorado and Washington, he added 21 points (one goal, 20 assists), 93 penalty minutes and a +15 rating.
Hannan was named the Sharks “Player of the Month” in Feb. and Oct. 2003 and was nominated for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy in 2015.
He was originally selected by San Jose in the first round (23rd overall) in the 1997 NHL Draft.
Internationally, the native of Surrey, British Columbia, represented his native Canada at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey, capturing a gold medal, and the 2005 World Championships, winning silver.
Hannan and his family will continue to reside in the San Jose area.
