Sharks debut Cali Fin jersey

The San Jose Sharks have officially unveiled the team’s new third jersey, the Cali Fin jersey. The team used former Sharks player Raffi Torres to help reveal the jersey and how it represents the City of San Jose, its culture and its way of life.

At the team’s State of the Sharks event for Sharks365 members on Jan. 25, Logan Couture, Kaapo Kahkonen and Nico Sturm skated through the Sharks head and onto the ice to show off the new look.

The black jersey will replace the Stealth jerseys that featured the Sharks logo. On the front will be the “Evolve Fin” that the Sharks call a “re-imagined, modern representation of a symbol popular since the inception of the franchise.”

A deeper dive into the jersey shows that the team paid tribute to the Hispanic heritage prominent in Northern California. While the jersey still features the basic striping found on all Sharks jerseys, there is also a striping pattern often seen on serapes.

“As a nod to this influence in the community, the team incorporated a teal yarn-dye-esque pattern on the sleeves and at the bottom of the jersey,” read the Sharks Cali Fin news release.

As a throwback to the team’s 2015 outdoor game, the Sharks added a re-imagined Northern California Shark-fin shoulder patch to the jersey. It’s similar to the patches featured on the Stadium Series jersey, but includes a Shark fin this time.

“With the Cali Fin uniforms, we had two primary design goals to achieve. First, we wanted the uniform to be consistent with our organizational goals, our brand and recent uniforms by looking forward to the future of the organization while simultaneously honoring our past,” said Doug Bentz, Chief Marketing Officer for the San Jose Sharks. “Secondly, to design a jersey for the ice, the street, and the community – one that would connect with our most tenured fans, attract new audiences to Sharks hockey, and relate with the Bay Area culture. We are proud of the final result and feel we accomplished our goals with the Cali Fin uniform.”

The Cali Fin design was a collaboration between the Sharks, the NHL and adidas.

San Jose Sharks full third jersey uniform

The Sharks will debut the Cali Fin look on Saturday, Feb. 17, against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The team plans to wear the jerseys at all of the home games in February and March, which totals up to 11 games.

In addition to the redesigned jersey, the rest of the team’s look will have a similar feel. The serape striping pattern that adds a special accent to the jersey will also be featured on the Sharks’ socks.

What’s more, as part of the uniform, the players will wear black helmets, black pants and black gloves to complete the look.

Ultimately, you’re going to end up with something like this.

The jersey is available as of today at all of San Jose’s retail outlets, including SAP Center, Sharks Ice in San Jose, Sharks Ice in Fremont and the Oakland Ice Center as well as online at the sharksproshop.com.

Sharks Jumbo 19 collection

The new Cali Fin jerseys aren’t the only new designs the Sharks unveiled recently. When the team announced the jersey retirement of “Jumbo” Joe Thornton earlier this month, it also revealed the Jumbo 19 collection, a series of merchandise dedicated to the one and only Joe Thornton.

The “logo” features an outline of the Jumbo — beard included — along with the nuber 19. A look at the Sharks Pro Shop website this morning shows that a lot of the key itmes, such as the sweatshirt, tye-dye t-shirt and basic black and teal t-shrits are already on backorder. But there’s plenty of merchandise to still be had.

Between the Jumbo 19 collection and the new Cali Fin jerseys, I anticipate a lot of fans sporting new looks at future games this season.
