The San Jose Sharks re-signed winger Barclay Goodrow to a two-year contract, the team announced today. It’s a two-way contract, worth $650,000 at the NHL level, a source told Friend of the Blog Kevin Kurz.
Goodrow, first signed as an undrafted free agent in 2014, made his NHL debut in the 2014-15 season. He scored 12 points in 60 games that season, but has only played in 17 NHL games over the last two years. During that stretch, Goodrow’s scored 84 points in 118 games with the San Jose Barracuda in the AHL.
That translates to about 0.33 points per game at the NHL level, using Rob Vollman’s translation factors, and that kind of production would put Goodrow in line for a role as a bottom six contributor. In 77 NHL games, though, Goodrow’s not been a reliable driver of puck possession, posting 46.3% corsi-for and fenwick-for percentages in his short time with the Sharks. Still, the Sharks expect him to be in the mix for a spot in training camp, according to Sharks Assistant General Manager Joe Will.
“Barclay played a key role in the success of the Barracuda last season and we feel he took a step forward in his development,” Will said in a statement. “He took on more of a leadership role with the Barracuda and we look forward to him competing for a spot in the NHL this season.”
He’ll face stiff competition come September, as Timo Meier, Kevin Labanc, Marcus Sorensen, Ryan Carpenter, and Danny O’Regan, among others, look to establish a spot on the roster. San Jose now has 45 players under contract in the organization, five shy of the 50 contract maximum, according to Cap Friendly.
