Sharks vs. Blue Jackets Preview: A false trap

You might remember my thoughts on the coaching change in Columbus. Since hiring John Tortorella, the Blue Jackets have won precisely two out of their five games and continue to flounder in the Metropolitan Division. And yet, this is not quite the hapless Colorado Avalanche that the Sharks dispatched…well, okay, not as easily as we would’ve liked, on Sunday.

In the Corsi Hockey League, the Blue Jackets occupy a spot just a few places below the Sharks (5v5, score adjusted CF% of 48.9 for CBJ. It’s 49.8 percent for SJ). They won’t quite roll over for the Sharks, so…meter those expectations, whatever they may be. Please.

The Sharks will wear their heritage jerseys for the first time this season, which alone makes the game worth the price of an admission ticket.

All three goals were scored in the first two periods as the Jackets took a 2-0 lead and the Sharks never recovered. Joe Pavelski scored late in the second for San Jose’s only tally.

Storylines

  • After a tight-ish win against the Avalanche on the road, the Sharks return for a nice homestand. With a long road trip looming, it’d be great for San Jose to bank a bunch of points at home.
  • The Paul Martin-Brent Burns pairing has not been great since Martin’s return from injury. Something to watch for./
