Sharks vs. Islanders Preview: Looking for a bounce back

The Sharks lost on the road for the first time this season, falling 7-4 to the Rangers in a sloppy contest that saw San Jose dominate possession but fail to generate consistent scoring chances. They’ll get a quick chance to right the ship as they head across town to Brooklyn to battle the Islanders at 4 p.m. on CSN Bay Area.

Special teams are an early concern for the Sharks, who have allowed goals on 50 percent of their opponents’ penalty kills while scoring at a 25 percent clip on the power play. The latter number is fine for now, but the Sharks haven’t exactly looked all that good in the process. We’ll be patient there, though.

Aaron Dell will almost certainly start for San Jose, getting his first NHL action of the season as Martin Jones gets a well-deserved rest. We’ll see if head coach Peter DeBoer decides to make any other substitutions — such as getting Ryan Carpenter into a game. I certainly won’t rule it out, particularly after back-to-back games where sloppiness is the dominant adjective.

The Islanders have been on the wrong end of some not-so-great puck luck to start the season but should still be a big test for San Jose, particularly while playing on the second of a back-to-back. This is San Jose’s only trip to Brooklyn during the regular season and a chance to pull back ahead in the Pacific Division.

This should be a fun one. Go Sharks.
