Timo Meier unsure when he’ll return to the ice

SAN JOSE — Timo Meier said he’s feeling a little better, but is not sure when he will return to the ice because he’s waiting for the go-ahead from the Sharks’ team doctors.

“Right now, I’ll take it day-by-day, [and] see how it gets better,” Meier said. “It might get better really quick, it might get [better] not so fast. But right now, it’s just about listening to my body and listening to the doctors.”

The Sharks’ first round pick in 2015 has not skated since Saturday. Head coach Pete DeBoer originally expected Meier to miss a day when Meier was first out. DeBoer said he is not worried about Meier’s sickness, but that it has given a chance for other players to get a longer look in camp.

“More guys are going to get an opportunity to play in exhibition games,” DeBoer said. “Maybe you had a guy penciled in for one game because you had [Meier] penciled in for two or three or four. And now every game that he misses, somebody else gets that chance.”

Meier said he’s not 100-percent sure what ails him, and is checking in with the doctor today to see if there’s any progress. While Meier will not be able to show the coaches why he should be on the team, he said this experience is still a chance to prove himself.

“It’s a little bit of a personality test [to show] how you can get back from stuff like that,” Meier said about overcoming injuries and sickness.

“Once I get back, I’ll focus on my goal.”
