Training Camp Notes & Quotes Day 3: Meier ‘under the weather’; Donskoi, Pavelski returns unkown

SAN JOSE — Sharks prospect Timo Meier did not play in the Sharks’ first intrasquad scrimmage on Sunday. But, head coach Pete DeBoer said he doesn’t expect Meier to be out much longer.

“[He was] just under the weather a little bit,” DeBoer said.

“I would expect him back tomorrow.”

Meier, the Sharks’ first round pick in 2015, is one of many young players in camp expected to push for a roster spot.

Pavelski, Donsokoi returns not yet set

Joonas Donskoi and Joe Pavelski also did not play in today’s scrimmage. Both have returned from the World Cup of Hockey, and DeBoer said he briefly saw the pair yesterday, but wants to speak with them more extensively before determining a plan to integrate them.

“I’m going to meet with them early next week, and we’ll come up with a timetable.” DeBoer said. “I think if I’m going to make an error, it’s going to be on the side of rest and caution.”

Donskoi and Pavelski, played for Finland and the United States, respectively, at the World Cup of Hockey, and saw their teams eliminated in group play. All five of the Sharks’ other representatives in the World Cup of Hockey remain at the tournament, as Europe (Mikkel Boedker) will play Canada (Brent Burns, Logan Couture, Joe Thornton, Marc-Edouard Vlasic) in a best-of-three final series beginning on Tuesday.

DeBoer likes progress compared to last year

Pete DeBoer is entering his second season as head coach of the San Jose Sharks. According to DeBoer, that familiarity has already paid dividends compared to his first training camp last year.

“It’s much nicer,” DeBoer said.

“You just feel like you’re much further ahead than we were at the same time here last year.”
