The United States time at the World Cup of Hockey is mercifully over. The Americans take on the Czech Republic as both sides prepare to head back to their respective places of employment ahead of the 2016-17 NHL season. I’m sorry.
More interestingly, FInland and Russia play as the Russians look for a spot in the next round of the tournament. If Russia wins, a date with Team Europe looms in the second round of the tournament. A win from Finland puts North America through to the semis.
Joe Pavelski and Team USA are playing for pride, and that’s about it, while Joonas Donskoi and Team Finland will do much of the same against the Russians. It’s not quite what we hoped for, but remember there are plenty of Canadian Sharks in action in the second round against … well, we’ll see who they end up playing.
Thursday, Sept. 22.
Team Finland vs. Team Russia, noon, ESPN
Team Czech Republic vs. Team USA, 5 p.m., ESPN2
