After trailing 2-0 in the first period, Canada stormed back to tie the game at two and eventually force a shootout where they toppled Switzerland. Canada scored twice in the shootout while the Swiss couldn’t manage a goal.
Sharks prospect Timo Meier was stopped in the second round of the shootout.
In the only game featuring all three Sharks prospects, Noah Rod was the only one to make his way on to the scoresheet. His shot was deflected to give Switzerland a 1-0 lead early in the contest. Despite having just one point, Rod was extremely active for the Swiss in both shot taking and shot blocking. He’s been one of their best players this tournament, which is good news for Sharks fans.
Not-so-good-news is that Meier continues to struggle. He was mostly absent from the action in today’s game, which just about sums up his tournament thus far. I can’t fairly judge a player based on a few games at a tournament, but his performance has certainly been a bit disappointing.
For Canada, Rourke Chartier has proved to be a versatile asset. He doesn’t have the top-level ceiling that Rod or Meier do, but he could prove to be a solid bottom-six player for San Jose.
Switzerland picked up a point in the game while Canada took two points. They move to second play with five points in three games and only Sweden to play. Switzerland is still in last having just picked up their first point of the tournament.
Russia 4, Belarus 1
The Russians thoroughly handled Belarus to stay perfect in Group B. Alexander Polunin scored twice for Russia, who sit in first place with eight points.
Russia outshot Belarus 32-18.
