Ben Smith put on waivers

Ben Smith was placed on waivers today by the San Jose Sharks, a move that seemed increasingly inevitable over the past few weeks.

In just six games with the Sharks, he played a grand total of 27 minutes and recorded all of one shot on goal. This reflects more on head coach Peter DeBoer’s apparent feelings on the forward than it does of his actual skill level, in my opinion, but the fit never seemed right.

So the big question here is: what’s next? My first thought was Raffi Torres, who has been playing with the Barracuda the past week. Others have suggested Dainius Zubrus and Barclay Goodrow as call-up possibilities. Zubrus was placed on the IR on Jan. 13, meaning he’s now eligible to be taken off it.

Having not heard anything on the condition of either Zubrus or Torres, it’s a bit of a toss-up — though I expect one of those two will be the corresponding move.

It’s been fun, Smith. Please don’t go to a team in the division.
