-A lot of this game was played on special teams, which is really illustrated by the scoring chance numbers in this game, as over half of the scoring chances in this game came on special teams.

-8 of those chance belonged to Dallas’ powerplay, as their top players really manhandled the Sharks’ woeful penalty kill (Spezza and Seguin both had 3 scoring chance points on the powerplay).

-Seguin also had 3 more scoring chances at even strength, because he’s really good, as anyone who isn’t a Boston beat reporter will tell you.

-On the Sharks’ side of things, I think this game shows how good Ben Smith has been for the Sharks’ bottom-six. While the bottom-six hasn’t seen a miraculous turnaround by any means, it’s gone from being routinely outplayed most nights, to a unit capable of outplaying one of the best third lines in the entire league.

-This marks 3 straight games that Mike “uses gender-based insults because that’s a cool thing to do” Brown has registered a scoring chance point, though Goodrow and Smith definitely have had parts to play in that streak.

-Overall, this was actually a pretty low-event game, by Dallas’ standards. I once tracked a game of theirs against Winnipeg where there was 52 scoring chances, so it was weird to see a game of theirs with only 29 total scoring chances.

-San Jose’s final count for scoring chances in this game was 13, but the majority of those chances comes due to their play in the third period, as they had only amassed 5 scoring chances in the first forty minutes of this game.

-For the second straight game, Tierney’s line didn’t produce much in the offensive zone.

-While he wasn’t as active as we’ve come to expect, Thornton was very much active in this game, balancing out his (relatively speaking) low pass attempt number with a pretty high shot attempts number.

-I think Patrick Eaves has been quite the find for Dallas this year, especially due to his production on their powerplay, but its unmistakable who the passenger is on his line when he plays with Benn and Seguin. Eaves attempted 3 plays in this game, while Seguin attempted 8 and Benn attempted 9.

-Odd game for Matt Irwin, as he led the Sharks in shot attempts, but didn’t have a single pass attempt.

-While the team as a whole didn’t have a great game in the neutral zone, certain Shark players like Thornton (100% carry-in rate on 4 successful entry attempts) and Irwin (2 carry-ins on 3 entry attempts) had pretty great games.

-I think this is one of the highest numbers I’ve seen for failed entries in a game, as San Jose had 12 failed entries at evens, 9 of those coming from the first line alone.

-The usual suspects did well on entries for Dallas, as Seguin, Hemsky, Benn, and Eakin put up very good entry numbers.

-Demers had the same amount of carry-ins against as Dillon on fewer entry attempts against, therefore we won that trade, right?

-Aside from Dillon, Irwin had a good game, as did Burns. Braun however, continues to struggle in this area of the game for some reason.

-The Demers-Jo. Benn pairing was targeted for 10 entries in this game, and allowed 4 carry-ins, while denying 3 of those entry attempts. The Daley-Jokipakka pairing was targeted for 18 entries, and allowed 12 carry-ins, while denying only 2 of those entry attempts. If Dallas wants to fix up their defensive play a bit next season, I think these results are just part of the reason why giving Demers more ice time and Daley less would be a good first step to shoring up their defensive play.

-Irwin and Goodrow had good games on exits, buuuuut…

-The rest of the team was basically garbage. Like, this has got to be one of the worst games on zone exits the Sharks have ever put together. League average for overall success% is around 25%, and the Sharks only managed 18% in this game. Those are some pretty ugly results.

-Dallas on the other hand, had a pretty average game on exits, as excellent performances like Seguin’s (4 successful pass-outs on 5 touches) were balanced out by bad ones like Garbutt’s (4 turnover on 8 touches).

-Patrick Eaves also had some pretty dreary results, turning the puck over 6 times, 3 of which came on his first 3 touches of the game, only 3 minutes into the game.
