Former Sharks defenseman Boyle will be holding a press conference at the SAP Center on Wednesday to “make an announcement regarding the future of his hockey career,” the Sharks announced. That press conference will be to announce his retirement, according to TSN’s Darren Dreger.
The Sharks acquired Boyle from Tampa Bay in July 2008, and the undrafted defenseman played with the Sharks until 2014, before signing as a free agent with the New York Rangers. With 269 points in 431 games played, Boyle is the Sharks’ all-time highest-scoring defenseman. He also holds that mark for the postseason, with 48 points in 62 playoff games with San Jose.
As a Shark, Boyle appeared in back-to-back Conference Finals in 2010 and 2011, was a member of Canada’s gold medal-winning squad at the Vancouver Olympics in 2010, and represented the Sharks at the 2009 NHL All-Star game in Montreal.
Boyle, acquired for his on-ice ability and Stanley Cup pedigree, became a fan favorite in San Jose winning the fanbase over with his appearances in San Jose’s annual holiday videos and his dynamic offensive ability. He won with Tampa Bay, but in the eyes of this writer, it is fitting he will announce his retirement with the Sharks.
