Former Shark Tommy Wingels retires

Former San Jose Sharks’ forward Tommy Wingels announced his retirement on Thursday. The 2008 sixth-round pick posted a video on his current Swiss league team Geneve-Servette HC’s Twitter account:

“I just want to say hello, and let you guys know, playing in Switzerland, playing in front of you guys, playing with GSHC was special because of you guys,” Wingels says referring to his time in the Swiss League. “The passion, the energy, the excitement that you guys brought to the games, that’s truly what makes playing for Servette special. Form the bottom of my heart, I want to say thank you from me, and my family, you guys made the end of my hockey career as special as could be.”

The Sharks selected Wingels 177th over all in the 2008 NHL Draft. The center scored 51 goals, and recorded 122 points over six-plus seasons with San Jose, with his best coming in 2013-14 when he finished with a career high 16 goals, and 38 points.

Wingels was traded to the Ottawa Senators in 2017 in exchange for Zack Stortini, Buddy Robinson, and a 2017 seventh-round pick.

The 32 year old carved out a nice career for himself for a sixth-round pick, appearing in 448 games. He last played in the NHL with the Boston Bruins during the 2017-18 season, before making the move to Europe.

Wingels played with a lot of energy in his game, and helped San Jose’s penalty killing, with the unit never ranking lower than 12th from 2012-2016. He was very popular among teammates and active in the community during his time with the Sharks.

What are some of your favorite memories from Wingels’ time in San Jose?
