Nick Petrecki Re-Signed to One-Year Deal

The San Jose Sharks re-signed the 2007 first-round draft pick to a one-year contract.

The Sharks announced the re-signing of Nick Petrecki to a one-year deal Wednesday morning. The young defenseman played in 12 minutes of one NHL game last season, a 3-2 win against the Anaheim Ducks.

He will carry a $715,000 cap hit according to

Petrecki played 42 games in the AHL last season, registering six points and 135 penalty minutes. 2012-13 was his fourth season in the AHL, so I imagine this is Petrecki's last season to show he has some value to add to this club. A 2007 first-rounder (28th pick), Petrecki is not so good defensively that it makes you forget about his pretty poor offensive game.

The 24-year-old defenseman did take home the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award in the 2011-12 season. Unfortunately for Petrecki, that award has nothing to do with his on-ice ability and everything to do with off-ice community service. Hey, awards are awards.

Training camp officially opens in San Jose today with the first pre-season game coming in just five days time. We are less than a month from the first day of the regular season -- not too much more waiting now.
