Quick Bite: Karlsson scores in OT, Sharks beat Flyers
Martin Jones gets his third shutout of the season and Melker Karlsson scores late in overtime to get the Sharks their fourth straight victory
Neither the Sharks or the Flyers were able to get the puck in the net in regulation, but a strong performance by Martin Jones and a Melker Karlsson overtime beauty were all the Sharks would need tonight in Philadelphia.
It was a quiet first period, with no goals and no penalties for either team. The Sharks outshot and outplayed the Flyers to start the game.
The first penalty of the game came against the Flyers halfway through the second. They would go on to take three more, including one that went into about a minute and forty-five seconds of overtime, but the Sharks were unable to convert on any of them, and only recorded two shots on goal.
It was a bad second period for San Jose, who went over twelve minutes without a shot on goal. The Flyers dominated possession, as you can see in the chart below:
Martin Jones made a couple of spectacular saves in the third period, and the Sharks were able to kill off every penalty they took, which brought us to 3-on-3 overtime.
3-on-3 is always exciting and tonight was no exception. After failing to convert on a minute and a half long powerplay to start the five minute period, the Sharks gave up a few big scoring chances to the Flyers, but Jones was there to stop all of them.
Melker Karlsson scored the game winning goal on a 2-on-1 rush off a beautiful pass from Joonas Donskoi, and the Sharks improve to a perfect 4-0-0 on their easter road trip:
Marleau watch will continue on Saturday against the Penguins.
