It took almost half of the season for the Sharks to score at least 5 goals in a game. Tonight, the Sharks (24-14-2) accomplished what seemed to be impossible, scoring a season-high 6 goals and defeating the Red Wings (17-18-5) 4-2 to end their 3 game losing streak.

Although the Sharks looked solid for most of the first period, they did allow the first goal of the game. With about 6 minutes left in the first, Thomas Vanek got the Red Wings on the board. Vanek’s shot deflected off Braun in front of the Sharks’ net and Jones was too late to make a save.

San Jose got their equalizer just a few minutes later. Joonas Donskoi scored one of the funkiest goals all season for the Sharks. Wingels’ shot deflected off his back, and then off Detroit’s Riley Sheahan and into the net. That goal was just the start of a barrage of goals for Team Teal in the first period. Defenseman Mirco Mueller scored his first goal of the season (and first in 44 games) after a beautiful slap shot that got through all traffic in front.

Patrick Marleau scored in the final minute of the first period to increase the Sharks’ lead to 3-1. Marleau’s shot near the top of the circle deflected off the stick of Danny DeKeyser and past Red Wings’ goalie Jared Coreau. He was pulled after allowing 3 goals on 15 shots.

With Mrazek in net for Detroit, the Sharks still managed to pour on the scoring chances in the second period. Mrazek stood tall and kept the Red Wings in the game for the time being.

Jut like the first period, the third was filled with goals. First, Joe Pavelski tipped a Brent Burns shot in the high slot to make it 4-1. Then, Mikkel Boedker scored just his 3rd goal of the season to make it 5-1. Detroit’s Anthony Mantha scored on a juicy rebound to cut the lead to 5-2. 6 minutes later, Joe Pavelski had an answer. He slapped a bouncing puck right past Mrazek to give San Jose its 6th goal of the night.

Detroit got a goal from Andreas Athanasiou to keep their slim hopes alive. His goal made it a 6-3 game. San Jose finished out strong and won the game by a final of 6-3.

Notes

• Mirco Mueller had himself quite a game. The young Swiss defenseman had a goal and an assist, each on the same shift in the first period. With the Sharks’ defense group open after injuries to Vlasic and Schlemko, it will be interesting to see if Mueller gets some more playing time soon.
• Patrick Marleau is inching his way closer to history. With his 493rd career goal, Marleau is just 7 goals away from reaching career number 500.
• 11 different Sharks had at least 1 point in tonight’s win.
• In his first game back since being bench, Mikkel Boedker scored his first goal since November 1 against the Coyotes.
• Another milestone tonight as Joe Pavelski earned his 600th career NHL point. /
