Quick Bite: Sharks take down Canucks in return from bye week

With a 5-12-4 record, NHL teams haven’t had luck coming back from their bye week this season. This didn’t seem to phase the Sharks after their week off. The Sharks (36-18-7) took off in the third period for a 4-1 win over the Canucks (26-29-6) on Saturday night. Martin Jones made 35 saves to extend the Sharks’ Pacific Division lead to five points.

The Sharks looked a bit rusty on their first few shifts back from their bye week. They were outshot 5-0 in the first five minutes, but bounced back with a barrage of shots on Ryan Miller. There were no goals in the quiet first period.

Early in the 2nd period, the Sharks got on the board after a Canucks’ miscue. Joel Ward perfectly read the Canucks’ defense change and set up Tomas Hertl for the score. Later in the period, Vancouver knotted the game up at 1. Burns’ clearing attempt failed to get out of the zone and Daniel Sedin took advantage, scoring his 13th goal of the year.

The Sharks headed into the 3rd period with a 2-1 thanks to a Patrick Marleau goal. Hidden behind the red line, Marleau swooped in to put the puck past Miller.

Mikkel Boedker broke a 19-game streak without a goal to give the Sharks a 3-1 lead in the 3rd period. His wicked wrist shot was too fast for Ryan Miller.

Logan Couture also scored a power play goal in the third period to seal the deal.

Notes

  • Melker Karlsson briefly left the game during the second period. He sustained a rough hit from Joe Labate and hit his head hard against the boards. Karlsson returned shortly after.
  • Brenden Dillon dropped the gloves with Joe Labate in the 3rd in retaliation for the hit.
  • This is San Jose’s 10th straight win in Vancouver.
  • Martin Jones looked very good in net tonight, stopping 35 of 36 shots faced. /
