Quick Bites: Sharks’ youth showed up to win against Ducks

A squad full of high level AHL talent and minimum veteran presence lit up a very young Anaheim Ducks team in their 5-0 win at SAP Center tonight.

Competition for a roster spot can sometimes be a good thing. The offense tonight was explosive, especially in the four-goal second period. Contributions came from Daniel O’Regan and Kevin Labanc, who are at the top of the list for making the big club out of the preseason. Filip Sandberg, Rudolfs Balcers, and Sasha Chmelevski helped spur the offense, with a goal coming from Sandberg in the first period.

More familiar faces that built on the offense were Mikkel Boedker (goal), Joonas Donskoi (assist), Barclay Goodrow (assist), and Ryan Carpenter (assist).

Brandon Bollig even scored a goal. It’s unlikely both he and Brandon Mashinter will make the Sharks full time, so he may have been feeling the pressure to compete internally, as well. He dropped the gloves against Jared Boll in the third period, adding on an extra minor penalty for roughing and leaving the Sharks shorthanded.

Thankfully, the young defensive crew impressed. Tim Heed and Joakim Ryan are already on the radar for the sixth or seventh-D position, but DeSimone handled himself well and earned an assist on O’Regan’s goal.

Troy Grosenick didn’t make an appearance in goal tonight, leaving Aaron Dell to earn the shut out.

There’s still plenty for the coaching staff to think about with regards to those open roster spots, but expectations should be tempered – it is the preseason, after all.

The Sharks will take on the Vegas Golden Knights in their next preseason game on Thursday at SAP Center.
