Sharks cut training camp roster by 13

The Sharks have reduced their training camp roster by 13 this morning, according to a press release by general manager Doug Wilson. Forwards Noah Gregor, and Joachim Blichfeld have both been returned to their junior clubs (the WHL’s Moose Jaw Warriors and Portland Winterhawks, respectively), while the following 11 players have been reassigned to the Barracuda training camp in the AHL:

Forwards: Jonathon Martin, Colby McAuley, Bryan Moore, Alex Schoenborn, Alexander True, Manuel Wiederer

Defensemen: Michael Brodzinski, Cavan Fitzgerald, David Makowski, Jeremy Roy

Goaltender: Stephon Williams

This leaves a roster of 42 players, it’s full of names about which we’re probably more excited, and can be found here.

The cut players fall into a few categories:

A few of these names may raise some eyebrows. If you recall, forward Noah Gregor made 16th on our list of the Sharks top 25 players under 25 this summer, so his early exodus is disappointing.

Similarly, defenseman Jeremy Roy was seventh on our list during each of the past two offseasons. It’s not Roy’s dismissal from camp that’s concerning, it’s his dismissal from camp so early. After the Sharks traded up to pick Roy at 31st overall in 2015, he was a highly touted and exciting defensive prospect. Unfortunately, a knee injury suffered ten games into 2016-17 ended his season. It’s not surprising that Roy will spend this season with the ‘Cuda, but it would have been heartening to see his camp tryout last a little longer. Still, if he can stay healthy, Roy’s ceiling remains high.
