The San Jose Barracuda’s captain John McCarthy will be participating in the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea representing Team USA, as announced New Year’s Day during the first intermission of the NHL Winter Classic. The 31-year-old winger helped lead the Barracuda to their first Pacific Division title during the 2016-2017 season, following up with two goals and five assists in the Calder Cup playoffs.
On being selected to the team McCarthy said, “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and I couldn’t be more proud be selected to represent the United States. It’s something you dream of when you first begin playing the game.”
McCarthy has played in 29 games this season with the ‘Cuda, racking up a total of 12 points. He is the current franchise leader for Barracuda games played, coming in at 163. He was originally drafted by the San Jose Sharks in 2006.
“We are extremely honored that John McCarthy has been named to the 2018 US Olympic Team, he truly epitomizes the American Hockey journey, going from captain of NCAA champion Boston University to pro hockey. He has been a huge part of the San Jose Sharks/San Jose Barracuda for many years,” said Barracuda General Manager, Joe Will. “He is a tremendous player and leader for the Barracuda and we look forward to him contributing to Team USA.”
